Breteuil was built on a promontory and dominates the Regional Nature Park of the Vallée de Chevreuse. The site has been the subject of continuous improvements for 400 years.
The French style gardens, which include a water mirror and borders planted with yews and topiary bushes, form a magnificent backdrop to the chateau; they are the creation of Achille Duchêne. These gardens are enclosed by an English style park laid out on one of the slopes of the Vallée de Chevreuse. Clumps of rhododendrons which flower in the spring, carpets of wild cyclamen in the autumn and striking trees punctuate the promenade which leads to 2 romantic pools, the realm of the ducks. In the hollow of a small valley are some outstanding examples of grafted chestnut trees, the remains of a plantation dating from the XVIIIth Century, which have now become ecological shelters for nocturnal birds of prey and woodland insects.
This botanical heritage has been enriched with contemporary creations on the Italian style terraces, which were laid out in the XVIIIth Century. On the oldest of these, the present Princes' Garden includes perennial plants, tree peonies, collector's Japanese cherry trees and shrubs of all kinds, all organised around the former watering pond for the kitchen garden and orchard and along a pergola which is covered in roses in spring. On another terrace the maze created from 1000 box trees, which was inaugurated in the year 2000, is a contemporary interpretation of the fanciful copse which disappeared in the XIXth Century.
A visit to Breteuil also means visiting the chateau, to discover its works of art and also its history, which is brought to life through the 50 waxwork figures from the Musée Grévin. You can also make your way from the washhouse to the fruit storeroom, from the hunting room to the stable, where you will meet Cinderella, the Sleeping Beauty or Puss in Boots, all heroes and heroines of the fairy tales of Charles Perrault With so much on offer, a walk at Breteuil becomes a magical process of discovery.
