Built on the river in the heart of the Loire Valley, which was the cradle of the French Renaissance, the Château de Chenonceau, (also known as the Château des Dames, or the Ladies' Chateau) is one of the best loved, best known and most visited historic monuments.
Its French style gardens, a symbol of romanticism, are a dazzling reminder of the taste and sophistication of the women who inspired them: Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis.
As well as tours of the Chateau and its gardens, the estate offers visitors a wide variety of attractions: the gourmet restaurant in the Orangery, a self-service restaurant, the sale of wines from the estate, a waxwork museum, the floral compositions in each of the rooms of the Chateau, a planted maze, the new kitchen garden and the XVIth Century farm.
And well worth discovering: a unique way of visiting or revisiting Chenonceau using your Apple iPod Chenonceau is the first historical heritage site in France to use this must-have technology in this way.
You can choose from several options for your visit: a simple tour of the Chateau and gardens, with a brochure in a choice of 11 languages which is supplied at reception; or why not tour the Chateau using the must-have technology of your Apple iPod? The self-guided tour is also available in 11 languages. Or the third option: a combined tour including the Waxwork Museum, which features a walk through history from the Renaissance to the Great War.
Throughout your tour of the Chateau you will discover the exceptional floral compositions.
From June to November each year the Château de Chenonceau hosts the works of a featured artist in the Gallery.
The gardens of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis boast a multitude of rare plant species and hundreds of climbing and standard roses. The Kitchen Garden and the XVIth Century farm are definitely not to be missed. A maze planted with 2000 yew trees and designed according to an Italian sketch dating from 1720 is adorned in its centre by a gloriette made of living wicker.
Boat hire
From July to August boats may be hired for leisurely contemplation of the arches of the Chateau gallery from the river. Rate: 4.00 Euros (maximum 4 people).
Evening walks
Every weekend in June, and every evening from 1st July to 31st August, the gardens are open for evening walks. The music of the master of Italian classicism Arcangelo Corelli celebrates the splendour of the illuminated setting. From the entrance gate the great avenue of hundred-year-old trees is transformed into a blue-lit arch against which the silhouettes of the sphinxes and the "Ladies' Chateau" stand out in the distance..
