Acquired by the Center Region in 2007, the domain of Chaumont-sur-Loire has become an essential place in the field of art and gardens. The triple identity of the estate: heritage, artistic and gardening makes it a unique place in the circuit of Loire castles.
Historic Grounds
The park of the Château de Chaumont is a fairly recent creation in view of the history of the Château itself. From 1880, Henri Duchêne, landscape architect, carried out a radical transformation of the site for the benefit of a vast pleasure park in the landscape style, also known as “English style”. The work lasted from 1884 to 1888. The composition imagined by the landscape architect thus offers the castle the setting and the showcase of which it has until now been deprived. The park also includes various facilities, factories or attractive elements: the reservoir also called “water tower”, the picturesque or “rustic” bridge and the dog cemetery.
An artistic, multidisciplinary and multisensory utopia
Since 1992, its International Garden Festival has been a laboratory of contemporary creation in the field of gardens and landscape design throughout the world. Each edition has a different theme and presents 30 new gardens, from April to November.
A Centre for Arts and Nature, the Domain of Chaumont-sur-Loire also invites around fifteen contemporary artists each year to create works for its spaces. This Art Season, presented from April to October, is followed in winter by exhibitions dedicated to photography, showing a particular look at nature and the landscape.
